The BALANCED LIFE!

Have you ever been applauded for having it “all together” in one area of your life, say your academics? Yet in another area─ perhaps your finances─ are a total wreck? Yes, it happens. But do you have even the slightest idea why?

A lot of times, I have been told I am great at a thing; let’s use writing for instance. But I have also been criticized for being socially awkward.

I am again just using this as one of many random examples.

While you may want to refer to those areas you are a wreck as your shortcomings, or weaknesses, or temperaments, or whatever other fancy names you may want to call it, that’s great. Or maybe not.

Often times, I have heard people excuse certain behaviors or traits as “how I am”, or “that’s how we phlegmatic behave” and much other bullcrap. (forgive the word). Yes, that’s all so true, but you’re wrong for not paying attention to it.

Apostle Joshua Selman, while teaching on retreats, identified six areas of your life which you must always pay attention to, and review often. Monthly even.

Your Spiritual life, your health, your mental development, your career/academics, your finances, and your relationships (with a spouse, with friends, with family, in society…).

I won’t go into the detail of explaining each. That’s not the emphasis of this post. Our focus today is on having a balanced life.

It is very possible and achievable; it may take some time, but still a possibility either way.

Having balance in two areas doesn’t mean you have a balanced life. Having five areas of your life all figured out does not make it a balanced life either.

I can almost hear your thoughts; doubting if anyone can then have a balanced life. I’d leave you to be the judge of that and to your own conclusion.

You see, the first thing that strikes the difference between a person who is comfortable with his/her unbalanced life and you who isn’t is the zeal. A hunger for better.

While it may be true that procrastination (for instance) can be blamed on your temperament, you can as well change the narrative.

In my life─ as earlier mentioned─ one striking area which was in need of a revival was my social life. Being out of my house for long hours ticked me off. Seeing too many people at once irked me a lot and yada yada yada.

However, I improved. I began to get very intentional about my social life, as well as other aspects. So, I can finally say I’m on that path to a balanced life. And you can too. In fact, you should.

It’s not fair on you, nor on others around you to be so good in one area, and lacking in another.

Mediocre has NEVER been cool.

Quite recently, I got a little disappointed.

There is this lady I really admire (no homo) and kinda look up to. Her life just seemed so ‘balanced’ and figured out, especially her spiritual life.

Something happened which forced me to remember the imperfection of we humans, myself inclusive.

You see, especially if you want to be influential and all up in people’s faces, you have to strive for balance.

People do not ask perfection from you; heck! They know you cannot be perfect, yet they expect it anyway.

Now I’m not telling you to live your life for them, no! Live for YOU, and while at it, seek balance, for YOU.

Well, this is already getting so lengthy; we’d pick up from here next time.

In the next post, we’d see practical ways you can create balance in your life.

I want you to chew on this slowly; and have it properly digested.
