What The Bible Says About Mindsets: 15 Scriptures That Encourage You to Build a Positive and Healthy Mind

If there is one thing I so strongly believe, it is that the Bible has a lot to say on a lot of things, actually, on everything. So, what does the Bible say about mindsets? There are a couple of Scriptures which talk about mindsets, both directly and indirectly.

Before then, however, mindsets are your personal convictions and inclination toward a particular thing, person or concept. It refers to the state of your mind and thought patterns, which ultimately shapes your habits, determines your behavior and controls your actions or reaction to things. What you believe about a particular thing is your mindset as regards that thing. If you want to know more about mindsets, find out here.

What Does The Bible Say About Mindsets?

What does the Bible say about mindsets

Scripture says quite a number of things about mindsets─ from things you believe in, to things you should set your mind on, to practical ways on how to transform your mind, and many others as well. It has never been the intention of God that out thought patterns remain as the world’s; but rather, if you must run the heavenly race, then you must have a renewed and transformed mind, which is in synchrony with heavenly things.

YOUR MIND CAN BE YOUR GREATEST LIMITATION!

The more you think about a thing, the more you form convictions surrounding them, and the more the actions of your life tilt toward those convictions you’ve built. It is therefore, no wonder that Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians told them to think of things that are true, things that are noble, things that are right, things that are pure, things that are lovely and admirable.

It’s simple math; the more you think on things that are pure, the more you believe that it is the way to live. You then form your convictions and theories about things that are pure; and subsequently, everything you do begins to reflect the convictions you now have.

Beliefs are convictions, and convictions influence your actions. Isn’t that what the entire Christian faith is summed up in? You believe in Jesus, build your convictions about Him and His ways, and then begin to act and live like it. Jesus understood this power of mindsets and that is why He said to just ‘believe’.

Any action─ good or bad─ which you do begins in your mind as a thought. See why it is important to think about what you think about, and how much Philippians 4:8 is the perfect blueprint to achieve that.

You and your mind

The Spiritual Mindset

There is such a thing as a spiritual mindset, so the natural question would be ‘what is a spiritual mindset?’ As earlier established, the thought patterns you have concerning a particular thing are predicated upon the constant thoughts you have in that regard.

The real question, however, should be ‘what do you fix your mind on?’ A spiritual mindset consists of the doctrines, truths and principles you have in relation to God’s Word, His person and His Kingdom. What have you been focusing your thoughts on? The fact that He is a Good, Good Father, or the fact that you feel He never answers when you call? The things you focus on determine what you end up believing. This also goes without saying that mindsets can be faulty. The fact that it exists in your mind as an ideology doesn’t mean it’s necessarily true.

For instance, if you don’t get a particular answer to your prayer at the time you want it, and because you lack discernment and a strong foundation to understand the principle of patience, you shut God out with the ban tag “doesn’t exist!” Here’s what really happened; first, the mindset you have about prayers and answers need a renewing; and then you focused on the disappointment you felt and finally built that conviction in your mind. So eventually, you completely close that chapter of your life. You begin to act like what you now believe to be true. Your mind also helps you bring up ‘logical reasons’ to justify your new belief; because after all, what you can’t really defend, you do not have a thoroughly concrete conviction on.

NOTE this is not a condemnation of any sort; it is probably just a pointer to the fact that mindsets can be wrong. The fact you so strongly believe a thing doesn’t confirm it as true. But the wonderful part is that there is hope. You can utterly renew your mind. Hooray!

How Do You Renew Your Mind With The Word of God?

If you want to renew your mind at all, then the Word of God is your sure compass. It gives you a guide and a blueprint of practical ways you can achieve this. If you want to make the dramatic shift from believing things that do not edify to things that do edify, then here’s how;

  1. Seek out a Scripture that alters the current stronghold you are trying to pull down. If it is fear, for instance, find out what the Bible says about fear. Read it, study it, think about it and meditate upon it. Joshua 1:8 is proof of the Biblical art of meditation. Really stay with the Word and absorb it in.
  1. Make positive and Biblical declarations to yourself. You can use those Scriptures you have sought out to make declarations to yourself. Insert your name where you can and personalize the Scriptures.
  1. Pray with those Scriptures. After declaring them to yourself, use them to pray powerfully and ask God for help.
  1. Deliberately apply those Scriptures to your life. You must then become intentional about behaving in this renewed thought. Consistency births reality. It generally becomes easier to apply the Scripture to your life after you have taken the afore mentioned steps; however, it is something you must remain intentional about.

15 Scriptures That Encourages You to Build a Positive and Healthy Mind

There are a lot of Scriptures on a new mindset, however, I carefully selected these 15 which I believe are clear and self-explanatory. These are Bible verses about controlling your thoughts, Bible verses about positive mindset and a general Bible study on mindset. These verses will encourage you on how and why you should guard your mind and things you should focus your thoughts on.

Colossians 3:2 NLT

Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.

Romans 8:5 NLT

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.

Romans 8:6 AMP

Now the mind of the flesh is death [both now and forever—because it pursues sin]; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace [the spiritual well-being that comes from walking with God—both now and forever].

I Peter 1:13 CEB

Therefore, once you have your minds ready for action and you are thinking clearly, place your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.

Ephesians 4:17&18 NLT

With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him.

Luke 24:45 NLT

Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.

Philippians 3:19 AMP

whose fate is destruction, whose god is their belly [their worldly appetite, their sensuality, their vanity], and whose glory is in their shame—who focus their mind on earthly and temporal things.

Romans 7:23 NLT

But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.

Proverbs 23:7 KJV

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.

Thoughts create mindsets

Philippians 4:8 NLT

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Romans 12:2 NLT

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

II Corinthians 10:5 NLT

We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

Isaiah 26:3 AMP

You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast [that is, committed and focused on You—in both inclination and character], Because he trusts and takes refuge in You [with hope and confident expectation].

Proverbs 4:23 CEB

More than anything you guard, protect your mind, for life flows from it.

Ephesians 4:22-23 CEB

Change the former way of life that was part of the person you once were, corrupted by deceitful desires. Instead, renew the thinking in your mind by the Spirit.

Renewing your mind is possible. It puts you in a better position to receive the blessings and promises of God. While you go through your day, be intentional about what you fix your thoughts on. Cultivate a habit of thinking about what you think about. This is not a theory to get you to become an over thinker, but rather, to help you keep track of what you focus on. This is how you can develop healthy and positive mindsets about everything.
