HUSH!

All day, I struggled within me for a topic to write on; I even considered ‘postponing’ it until tomorrow, believing by then I would have figured out just what my next post was going to be on.

I had a little busy past few days, so I didn’t really get time to sit and write; and quite frankly, I was blank.

While I battled leaving this off for tomorrow, I realized I could write about the exact feeling.

While I thought of shifting this till tomorrow, I remembered my decision and resolve to remain consistent with this, and that was my first push.

..

..

Sometimes, in all honesty, you may get overwhelmed with tons of unending things to do; sometimes, those things pile up because you leave one activity for ‘later’, another for ‘tomorrow’ and on and on it goes.

While it’s true that you may legitimately have an excuse, procrastination is still very real and an enemy to productivity.

Hush the little voice within…

Here’s the thing; the first thing you need is a little more discipline– stronger and louder than the little voice reminding you of how tired you are.

“Just leave it, you’d do it tomorrow. Do you want to break down?” That little voice always counsels, and while it may seem like the best decision at the time, the trouble is, most times those tomorrow’s never come.

Here’s a little story; you know na, I always have a story to tell:

Back then in the boarding house, we always had our portions to weed behind the dormitory.

Every girl in Ss1 had a responsibility to clear the growing weeds behind the hostel. We all knew where our exact portions were; and some days, they were inspected without prior notice.

If your portion remained messy, that spelled trouble.

My friend would always say, “let’s go and clear our portions before they start rising.”

And in taking her advice, I realized I’d have to be back there at least twice every week. And Lord knows how lazy I was to do that, and especially how much I hated being back there.

But then, there was sense in what she said.

My response? I thought NO! I’d rather go there once in two weeks after it has gathered and clear it up at once. Yeah, I let that inner ‘wisdom’ lead.

“Genius!”, I probably thought to myself. But was it really?

When you procrastinate and pile stuff up, you wear yourself out, it takes more of your time and hinders you from getting other important stuff done at the moment.

So, what happens then? You have to again procrastinate that important stuff, till some other time. It’s a circle– a vicious, time-consuming, energy-burning circle.

Back to my story;

Before I decided to do it in two weeks, I initially agreed; BUT, and that was a big but, ” let’s do it tomorrow.” I said and she agreed.

Unfortunately, my tomorrow’s never became a reality and she had to go on without me. For the first split seconds, after she told me she had gone ahead to do hers, I felt betrayed, lol. That was when I decided I’d just do mine after two weeks.

Before two weeks came, unfortunately, our housemaster came around and inspected.

Yeap, I, and the others who were also waiting for ‘tomorrow’ got punished.

The worst part, we had to miss evening dining that day because we weren’t let off the hook till we completed the tasks.😢💔

And my friend, well, she didn’t get punished nor did she have to miss the evening meal. I know right if I had only listened.

Truth is, there are more than just one thing to learn from this, but I’d focus on the procrastination part. I got into trouble because I refused to take action at the moment.

..

..

When next the urge to procrastinate comes, remind yourself of the trouble you may get into, or the opportunities you might miss.

Your story may be a lot different from mine, and probably a whole lot worse too, but as you leave this page, I’d like you to fink abourit.
